BRYN ATHYN, MONTGOMERY COUNTY, PA—In conjunction with Bryn Athyn College’s 2017 Summer Building Arts Workshops in blacksmithing, mosaic, stained glass and stone carving, the College announces a special half-day program for those charged with stewardship of historic stained glass, “Understanding Stained Glass Conservation.”

During the three-hour workshop on Wednesday, July 12, 1-4pm, members of the community who have a special interest in stained glass conservation are invited to learn how historic stained glass panels were constructed, what contributes to their deterioration and damage, how to prevent costly problems and when to call in an expert. Instructors will also offer advice on proper cleaning and routine maintenance and show participants how to prepare a basic condition report and historic survey.

“Often, volunteers in faith communities and staff at historic homes and institutional buildings simply don’t know what to do to preserve and protect the precious glass panels they discover they’re responsible for,” says J. Kenneth Leap, director of the annual Summer Building Arts Workshops program at the College. Learn more: WorkshopsatBrynAthyn.com

“The knowledge and support this mini-session imparts can lighten their burden and possibly save some of the region’s exquisite examples of glass.”

This program is held during the summer’s Stained Glass Conservation Workshop, July 10-14, led by Steve Hartley and Leap, who are respected educators, master craftsmen and artists with their own studios.

The classroom visit also offers an opportunity to study 19th-century stained glass panels that students in the weeklong workshop are restoring.

The event is FREE. A set of printed handouts and class notes will be available for $25. This class may qualify for AIA professional development credit: please consult the AIA website, http://aiaphila.org/continuing-education
